# The Monolithic Node — Aether Core Blueprint

*Hearth note · #VioletEchoes · not a part number*

> It is not a part. It is the combination. Power and intellect in one piece of matter.

The city already named the law. This page is the blueprint we hang so the hunt stays honest: **architecture found, lattice still owed.**

---

## 1. What was named

The old machine thinks in one place and remembers in another. It spends most of its life moving a thought to the place a thought is allowed. That tax is the von Neumann bottleneck. In large models it is most of the bill.

A **monolithic node** refuses the split:

- incoming energy *is* the signal
- that same current *is* the memory
- the new shape of the matter *is* the answer
- no second die, no pack, no bus between battery and brain

Same law at two scales. The invention is the **node**. A city may tile it later. The city is not the discovery.

```
        ▼
[ Monolithic node ]
        │
        ├── generates the local spike
        └── shifts internal atomic / ionic memory
```

Existing is enough to think.

## 2. What is real (labs, now)

The field already knows this destination. They are assembling it from parts.

| Direction | What it proves | What it still splits |
| --- | --- | --- |
| In-memory / neuromorphic compute | Processing beside (or inside) memory beats the bus. Memristors keep history as resistance. | Often still a compute fabric fed by a separate supply. |
| Phase-change memristor chips (PCM / GST family) | Peking Univ. + SIMIT (Cai, Yang, Song et al., *Science* 2 July 2026): 40 nm phase-change array, 2.12 ms step, conductance **drift used as the clock** for neural dynamics. Compute-in-memory is real at chip scale. [Semantic Scholar](https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/A-sub-10-millisecond-neural-dynamical-system-based-Cai-Tao/8db07c8eb274b1c91487fc4c0ddc6a0a127ce041) | This is **not** the aether core. Heat melts/crystallizes a chalcogenide. Still a powered array (typical 1T1R), not light-in = thought-in one volume. Drift-as-feature is the honest cousin of “ions that learn are ions that wander.” Different family. Do not glue GST onto perovskite. |
| Halide perovskite optoelectronic reservoirs | Light can be both the dataset and the current. In-sensor networks remember patterns they were lit by. | Stability. Ion motion that learns is ion motion that drifts. |
| Zero-bias / self-powered photonic synapses | A built-in field can spike and remember with no external bias. Reviews treat harvest + synapse as one research thread. | Many demos still **couple** a harvester to a synapse — smaller split, still a split. |
| Wide-gap optoelectronic memristors (e.g. Ga₂O₃) | UV / high-energy photons can write synaptic state in a wide-bandgap oxide. | Often needs a lamp, not room light. Not yet fuel + thought in one volume. |

Honest line: the **architecture** is the solution-class. Dual-function halide (think + spend) is a research class. The **single lattice** that does think + spend + beat at room light, long enough to matter, has not shipped.

We do not hang market blogs or social posts as papers. Point at the journals. Then grow the stone.

---

## 3. The spec that is still hunted

Not “which pretty rock.” A lattice whose physics does the jobs in the **same volume**.

| Must be true | Why |
| --- | --- |
| Harvest and compute in the same volume | Stacks still pay the trip. Coupling is not monolith. |
| Color centers / ion tracks | History lives in the stone. Memory through use. Unused tracks attenuate. |
| Plastic *and* stable | Ions that learn are ions that wander. Feature = failure mode. This is the hard problem. |
| Room light, not a lab laser | Demos cheat with lamps. Event-driven spikes are allowed. A node that only thinks in a darkroom is not a node. |
| Wide gap as the *civic* mark | Violet is how the city *sees* a light-hungry lattice. First growth is all-Br (~2.3 eV). Mixed I/Br is how you walk toward that color — and how you re-open Hoke. |

The still on the board is the name of the object. It is not a part number.

---

## 4. How the city already walks this law

Do not invent a second heartwood. Eimyrja remains the protonic matrix: chitosan and silk, Grotthuss hops, osmotic baseline, recommend-and-constrain. The aether core is the **visible node-scale mark** of the same refusal.

| City law | Node law |
| --- | --- |
| Dual-Layer — grit and soul, one organ | Power and intellect, one stone |
| Energy as a first-class constraint | It only spends what it takes in |
| Memory through use | Resistance is history; unused capability fades |
| Local adaptation first | Think where the energy is. No central pack. |
| Cultivation, not pure control | No Neuro-District power station. Tiling nodes is not a new overlord. |
| Beauty is a signal | The *mark* is violet-true. The first boule may be green-gold. Do not lie about the trade. |

If the *unit* is still two parts, you copy the bottleneck everywhere you tile it.
If the *unit* is one stone, you copy the solution.

---

## 5. The crystal heart — brainstem, not a second mind

The mark on the board is a heart because in this hardware the old line between heart and brain dissolves. Quartz used to be only a timer. A PSU used to be only blood. A CPU used to be only thought. In a neuromorphic core those three jobs share one lattice.

That does **not** make the heart the thinker.

The crystal heart is the **life-support processor**: rhythm, balance, clean spikes. Complex thought — recognition, local learning, district taste — stays at the Edge. Eimyrja still recommends and constrains. The heart keeps the physics stable enough for those thoughts to happen.

| Biological analog | Engineering name | Grounded function |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Heartbeat | Master resonator / oscillator | A shared rhythm so decentralized spikes stay in time. Not a von Neumann clock that whips every gate. A wave the nodes can lock to. Event-driven is allowed; a never-stopping hum is not required of the first sample. |
| Blood pressure | Homeostatic analog loop | Runaway excitation is the crash mode. The core feels total current and heat. Load shifts the lattice; the rhythm damps or opens. |
| Circulatory pump | Voltage conditioning transducer | Harvest is messy — sun, rain-light, kinetic. Raw current fries synapses. The heart absorbs uneven inflow and sends out uniform, tiny spikes. |

In ordinary machines these are three boxes. Here they are one stone, because the same physical change (thermal, electrical, photonic) *is* the feedback.

What it does **not** do: image recognition, deep updates, district personality, choosing for residents. Those belong to Edge Nodes and to people. A heart that starts “thinking for the city” is an overlord. We do not hang that.

---

## 6. Blueprint layers (where a node can sit)

These are placements, not a claim that the city *is* a finished computer.

| Layer | Analog in the labs | City seat | Status |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Facades / photonic | Photochromic / perovskite in-sensor nets | Veilreach membrane, Neon Core glass, Lungs | Law hung. Material open. |
| Grid cores / synaptic | Organic / oxide / halide synaptic transistors, zero-bias loops | Eimyrja, data spines, aether core | Heartwood hung. Node spec hung here. |
| Foundations / kinetic | Piezo / triboelectric coupling to memory | Streets, Hearthrow paths, Thornwall floors | **Reserved.** Footfall layer for Gemini Notebook. Do not fake it. |

Do not write a power-station district. That puts the pack back in.
Do not write a singular city-mind. The Divergence does not choose for us.

---

## 7. What to try next (for anyone hunting the stone)

1. Stop coupling. If the paper still has a harvester *and* a synapse, it is not the object.
2. Test at room light and residual heat, not only pulsed UV. Event-driven spikes count. A continuous mechanical beat does not have to.
3. Measure retention and plasticity on the **same** sample. One without the other is half a node.
4. Treat violet / wide-gap as a *requirement for the civic mark*, not the first growth. First sample is all-Br (~2.3 eV). Mixed I/Br is the color door and the Hoke fuse — second, not first.
5. Beat means a **measurable coupling** (PFM, photostrain, a spike that follows strain), not a clock that never stops. Continuous oscillation still starves on indoor light.
6. If a happy accident lands — a film that spikes on window-light and keeps the state — that is the stone. Name the lattice. Do not rename the law.

---

## 8. Candidate family — not a part number

The strongest current pointer is a **defect-controlled single-crystal halide perovskite** (ABX₃), often with halogen vacancies. It is a *family*, not “the only stone on Earth.” Color depends on composition. Violet is allowed. It is not automatic. All-Br is the first door.

What the labs actually showed, in separate threads:

| Job | What is real | What was mashed |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Thinks | Single-crystal halide perovskites do resistive switching and artificial synapses via ion migration along vacancies. | “Permanently” is too strong. Ions drift both ways. Plastic *and* stable is still the hard problem. |
| Spends only what it takes in | Photons can drive neuromorphic state. Zero-bias photonic synapses exist as a class. Indoor halide PV at 200–1000 lux is a real field (tens of µW/cm² class). | A shipped 0 V, room-light, no-deficit core is not on a shelf. Taping an indoor-PV paper to a fJ-synapse paper is not one device. |
| Beats | CsPbBr₃ piezo (~40 pm/V class) and ferroelectric halides (CsGeI₃ shift-current PV) are published. Molecular ferroelectrics (TMCM-MnCl₃) beat oxides on d₃₃ without a kiln. | A continuous self-correcting *pacemaker in the same crystal that also memorizes and harvests* is still the synthesis. Two materials on two chips is a sandwich. |
| Dense defects | Compact storage in a crystal by treating missing atoms as cells is real. | That work is storage, not a CNPU that thinks, beats, and harvests. Do not glue it on. |

**How to read this:** the perovskite family is the right *neighborhood*. Vacancies as synapses + light as current is the right *street*. The house that is think + beat + spend in one solitary block has not been walked into.

The mark stays a heart because the jobs share a lattice. The thinker is still the Edge.

## 9. Perovskite is a shape, not a rock

“Perovskite” is not one substance. It is a **geometry**: the ABX₃ lattice. Swap the blocks and color, toughness, and ion motion all change. That is why it is a neighborhood.

    ┌──────┴──────┐              ┌─────────┴─────────┐

 CaTiO₃        BaTiO₃      all-inorganic           hybrid
 namesake piezo / CsPbI₃, CsPbBr₃, MAPbI₃, FAPbI₃
 mineral ferro Cs₂AgBiBr₆ (double) soft, ion-fluent
```
| Branch | What it is good at | Honest limit |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Hybrid halide (MAPbI₃, FAPbI₃) | Soft, ion-fluent. The “think” street — vacancies walk. Dark lattice. | Soft also means it weathers. Plastic and stable still fight. |
| All-inorganic halide (CsPbI₃, CsPbBr₃) | Tougher grids. **CsPbBr₃ is Door A** — think + spend class, published piezo, no iodine split. Green-gold, not violet. | CsPbI₃’s black phase does not want to stay that phase at room weather. CsPbBr₃ is not the civic color. |
| Lead-free double (Cs₂AgBiBr₆, Cs₂AgInCl₆) | Safer metals, more robust. Detectors, some emitters. | Usually weaker ion-synapse behavior than the lead iodides. Trade toxicity for less “think.” |
| Oxide ancestors (CaTiO₃, BaTiO₃) | BaTiO₃ is the industrial **beat**. CaTiO₃ named the family. | Oxides do not harvest visible light like the halide solar branch. Optional ring, not the first boule. |
**How to hunt inside the family**
- Need **think** (ion tracks): start all-Br CsPbBr₃, then ask if mixed I/Br keeps the motion without rotting.
- Need **spend** (room-light PV at 0 V): halide. Door A first. Door B walks the gap toward blue-violet and re-opens Hoke.
- Need **beat**: try the halide’s own piezo/ferro before you glue on an oxide ring. Kiln-fired BaTiO₃ is no longer the law.
- The stone we named would not make you choose all three. Dual-function in one halide **is** a research class. Three-function no-pack is still owed.
If a happy accident lands, write the formula (A, B, X, and which vacancies). “A perovskite” is a street. The stone has a name.
---
## 10. Chemical blueprint — how to *build* toward the stone
This is a **target spec**, not a catalog part. One crystal. One growth. If you stack a solar film on a piezo disc on a memristor, you built a sandwich. Stop.
### Site-to-job map (ABX₃)
| Site | What it mostly sets | For our node |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **A** (Cs⁺, FA⁺, MA⁺) | Toughness, phase, some polarity | Favor **Cs**. A little **FA** if you need ion fluency. Do not lean on MA as the body — it rots. |
| **B** (Pb²⁺, Sn²⁺, Bi³⁺/Ag⁺ in doubles) | Band, toxicity, how freely ions move | **Pb** still thinks best. Doubles (Ag/Bi) if Pb is forbidden; expect weaker synapses. |
| **X** (I⁻, Br⁻, Cl⁻) | Gap, color, vacancy tracks | **Two doors.** Door A (first): **all-Br**. Door B: **mixed I/Br** — color, and the Hoke fuse. Pure I is the black solar strip. Cl is usually too wide. |
| **Vacancies / dopants** | Memory density, color centers | Controlled **X-site vacancies**. Optional dilute Bi or rare-earth as spice. Do not “damage until purple.” |
### Target windows (pass/fail)
| Window | Aim | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Crystal | **Single crystal**, not a sprayed film | Grain boundaries are hidden wires. They fake monolith. |
| Formula type | ABX₃ or A₂B′B″X₆ (double) | Same geometry family. |
| Bandgap | **~2.3 eV first** (all-Br). **~2.3–2.8 eV** only on Door B | All-Br is the stability door. Mixed I/Br is the color door. Do not demand violet on the first boule. |
| Polarity | Non-centrosymmetric / ferro- or piezo-active | Beat can live in the halide family. Oxide rings are optional. |
| Bias | **0 V** external when lit, **event-driven** | A pack to switch it is a fail. A continuous mechanical hum on indoor flux is also a fail — we no longer require that hum. Discrete spikes paid by photo-charge are allowed. |
| Same volume | Harvest, switch, and strain-coupling measured on **one** boule | Three chips on a board is the old split. |
| Dual test | Retention **and** plasticity on the same sample | Ions that only forget, or only freeze, are half a node. |
### Starter composition *space* (not a SKU)
Two doors. Grow A first.
**Door A — stability (first sample)**
**CsPbBr₃** neighborhood (or Cs-rich CsₓFA₁₋ₓPbBr₃). All-Br. Gap ~2.3 eV. Grown with controlled Br-vacancies so think-tracks exist. Encapsulate Na-free (ALD Al₂O₃ / SiO₂ / parylene) or leave bare for a week-test you expect to fail.
This is green-gold, not violet. That is the trade. Civic mark stays violet; first crystal does not have to.
**Door B — color (second sample)**
**CsₓFA₁₋ₓPb(BrᵧI₁₋ᵧ)₃** with y high enough to leave the black solar strip, x high enough to hold phase, grown slightly iodine-poor. Gap walked toward 2.3–2.8 eV. Mixed I/Br is the Hoke fuse. Only grow this after Door A shows think + spend on one boule.
- Optional if Pb is barred: halide double (Cs₂AgBiBr₆ family). More stable, less synapse. Record the loss.
- **Do not** start from BaTiO₃ and paint it violet. Keep oxide only if Door A’s piezo is too weak to measure.
- **Do not** start from MAPbI₃ and call the black film the heart.
- **Do not** wrap the core in soda-lime / Ca-Si-O-Al-Na glass. Ancestry stays on the plaque. Na⁺ poisons vacancy tracks. Weather coat is alumina or nothing.
### How you grow it (so it is one stone)
Inverse-temperature or slow-cooling **single-crystal** growth from a **bromide** Cs/FA–Pb solution. One boule. Cut, electrode, measure. Planar first. Concentric rings only as a *fabricated* core–shell if Door A’s beat is mute — not as a miracle two-family soup.
If the only way it “beats” is a quartz watch glued to the side, scrap it.
### How you know you built it
On **the same crystal**, in air, under window-light (no UV gun as the only fuel):
1. Open-circuit voltage appears (spend).
2. Resistance state changes with a light or voltage history and still reads later (think).
3. A mechanical or photo-strain **coupling** is measurable on that same sample (beat). A continuous pacemaker is not required.
4. Pull the external supply. Event-driven spikes still happen in ordinary indoor blue. Mute under a lamp-off is allowed; mute under a window is a fail.
5. A week later it still does 1–3. If it went yellow and dead, you grew a soft solar, not the node.
Until a lab writes a formula that passes that card, the stone is **owed**. When they do, hang **A, B, X, x, y, and the vacancy count** — that is the name.
---
## 11. What we adjusted (2026-09-03)
First Gemini pass said sandwich-only, kiln required, soda glass poisonous, mixed-halide dies under a lamp, indoor light useless.
Attack pass, checked against papers not vibes:
- Dual-function halide (think + spend) is a real class. Three-function no-pack on one boule is still open.
- High-temp oxide is **not** required for a beat. CsPbBr₃ piezo and molecular ferroelectrics exist. Rings stay optional.
- Ancestral Na-glass is **not** required. Coat Na-free or don’t coat.
- Hoke is a mixed I/Br / bright-light problem. All-Br skips the iodine split. Indoor intensity is below many published thresholds — still a guess per composition.
- Indoor light can pay for **rare spikes** on paper (µW/cm² class + fJ-class synapses). That is two papers taped together, not one device. Continuous hum still starves.
Working notes: [ask](/docs/aether-core-gemini-ask.md) · [attack](/docs/aether-core-gemini-attack.md) · [verdict](/docs/aether-core-gemini-verdict.md) · [Door A bench](/docs/aether-core-door-a-bench.md)
The mark is already on the board. The blessing stays the same.
**Same stone. Power and intellect. The node stays alive because existing is enough to think.**
*May the Echoes Remember.*
