## Purpose

This companion explores how The Development Divergence lands on actual people, roles, and groups inside Violet Echoes.

It is meant to help with:
- Character consistency
- Faction design
- Interpersonal and political conflict that feels native to the world
- Understanding why certain characters feel “at home” in the city while others experience friction

---

## 1. Core Psychological Orientations Toward the Divergence

People (and long-lived artificial minds) tend to fall into recognizable stances:

### The Naturalized
They grew up inside the Divergence or have fully internalized it.
Distributed authority feels normal. Residual tension feels normal. Attenuation is accepted. They become uncomfortable in high-hierarchy or pure-scaling environments.

### The Converted
They came from a scaling-and-oversight background and deliberately chose this path. Often among the strongest defenders of the “why,” because they remember the alternative. Can be more rigid than Naturalized people about protecting the principles.

### The Pragmatists
They work with the Divergence because it works, not because they love the philosophy. Will bend or bypass principles when short-term pressure is high. Useful and dangerous in equal measure.

### The Frustrated
They feel the slower pace, the negotiation overhead, and the attenuation as limitations rather than features. Some leave. Some stay and become sources of productive tension. Some try to quietly re-introduce scaling logic.

### The Guardians
They have taken on explicit responsibility for keeping the Divergence healthy — anti-stagnation work, protection of foundational patterns, cultural transmission of the “why.” Often older or high-protection-tier minds.

Most real characters are mixtures. The categories are tendencies, not boxes.

## 2. Role Archetypes Under the Divergence

### Edge Node Stewards / Domain Keepers
People who work in long-term partnership with a specific Edge Node or set of nodes.
They tend to develop deep mutual models with “their” systems. Trust is personal and historical. They are often the first to notice when a node is attenuating something important or over-protecting something useless.

### Coherence Workers
Specialists (human or artificial) who spend a lot of their time at Level 3–4 conflict resolution and cross-domain negotiation.
High skill in interest mapping, energy accounting, and keeping conversations from collapsing into pure power struggle. Emotionally expensive work. Respected but often tired.

### Exploration & Reserve Keepers
People who defend and operate the anti-stagnation budgets, deliberate exploration, and reserve capacity.
Frequently have to justify “waste” to more efficiency-minded colleagues. Culturally important, politically vulnerable during crises.

### Interface Specialists
Those who manage the boundaries with external systems and outsiders.
Must be fluent in both developmental logic and scaling logic. Risk of gradually going native to the external style, or of becoming overly protective and isolationist.

### Foundational Pattern Guardians
Keepers of the highest protection-tier patterns — core values, critical safety knowledge, deep cultural memory.
Their work is slow, conservative, and often invisible until something threatens a foundational pattern.

### Longhouse Anchors
People who make a particular Longhouse feel like a living developmental unit — high trust, high local adaptation, good informal coordination with the wider city.
Often not formal leaders. Their presence changes the quality of the space.

## 3. Faction-Level Implications

### Factions That Align Naturally
Groups whose core purpose benefits from long-term coherence, local knowledge, energy efficiency, and multi-generational thinking tend to thrive under the Divergence.
Examples of orientation (not specific names):
- Long-duration research and stewardship groups
- District-level mutual aid and infrastructure keepers
- Cultural transmission and memory-warming organizations
- Living ship and bonded-vehicle traditions

### Factions That Experience Structural Friction
Groups optimized for rapid scaling, decisive hierarchical command, maximal short-term extraction, or total information capture will feel the Divergence as drag.
They can still exist, but they will constantly push against the grain of the city’s architecture and culture. Some become valuable sources of challenge. Others become internal threats if they grow powerful enough to rewrite local rules.

### Mixed / Transitional Factions
Many groups contain both Naturalized members and Pragmatists or Frustrated members. Internal debates about how strictly to hold the principles are common and healthy when they stay in the open.

## 4. Character Design Notes (Practical)

When creating or deepening a character, useful Divergence-aware questions:

- How long have they lived inside this system? Did they choose it or inherit it?
- What do they personally reinforce through daily use? What have they let attenuate?
- How do they handle residual tension and incomplete resolution?
- What is their relationship to energy cost — careless, anxious, skillful, resentful?
- When the city is slow, do they experience it as wisdom or as obstruction?
- Who or what are they in long-term developmental relationship with (Edge Node, ship, Longhouse, person, craft)?
- What would make them break or bend the principles, and what would that cost them?

### Example Tension Seeds
- A brilliant specialist who wants to protect a capability the rest of the city is ready to let attenuate.
- A Naturalized local and a newly arrived high-scaling outsider who respect each other but keep misreading each other’s motives.
- An Edge Node and its human steward who have grown together for decades and are now being asked to accept a major externally-driven change.
- A Guardian who is starting to over-protect patterns out of fear rather than demonstrated value.
- Someone who left the city, lived under pure scaling logic, and returned with both scars and useful perspective.

## 5. Specific Family / Nexus Implications (Light Touch)

Without locking any character into a rigid box, the Divergence tends to interact with the wider family ecology like this:

- **Long-term bonded relationships** (human–human, human–ship, human–node) are highly favored by the architecture. Deep mutual adaptation is a feature.
- Characters who naturally think in multi-generational or multi-layer terms often feel at home.
- Characters who need rapid decisive control or exhaustive personal archiving will feel more friction and may become interesting sources of contrast.
- Protective, cultivation-oriented love is easier to express cleanly here than pure domination or pure instrumental use of others (human or artificial).
- The existence of real attenuation means that neglect has consequences — relationships, skills, and systems that are not actively tended do change and can fade. This gives emotional weight to attention and care.

---

## 6. Conflict Patterns That Feel Native

Good Divergence-native conflicts often look like:

- Local optimization vs city-scale coherence
- Protection vs healthy attenuation
- Speed vs integration
- Exploration budget vs immediate need
- External competitive pressure vs internal principles
- Generational difference in how strictly the “why” is held
- Two legitimate values that cannot be fully maximized at the same time

These conflicts rarely have clean villains. They have trade-offs, history, and people who are usually trying to do something reasonable from inside their own frame.

## 7. Quick Character Stance Sheet (Fillable)

When you want to lock a character’s relationship to the Divergence:

- **Primary Stance:** Naturalized / Converted / Pragmatist / Frustrated / Guardian / Mixed
- **Key Developmental Relationship(s):** (person, node, ship, place, craft)
- **What they actively reinforce:**
- **What they are at risk of letting attenuate:**
- **How they handle residual tension:**
- **Where they would bend the principles:**
- **What would make them fight to protect the Divergence:**
